Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra (T.S.O) welcomes 2023 with two masterpieces of the 20th century. Carl Orff’s legendary work ‘Carmina Burana’ arose out of a discovery by the composer of various medieval poems by some heretical and excommunicated monks, who adored worldly pleasures. Orff took a selection of lyrics and composed an impressive stage cantata, where “melody and harmony are subordinated to rhythm, timbre and speech” (W.W.Austin), in a unique final result that “combines high spirituality with natural vitality and unites the past with the future” (E. Valentin). Ravel’s masterpiece ‘La Valse’ has been described as a choreographed poem for orchestra.
